The morning sun shines on the Gothic cathedral outside of my hotel window. For days, it’s been gray, cool, and windy in St. Louis. This morning, the temperatures are in the low 40s with wind chills in the 30s. I’m not ready for cold weather. Soon enough, I’ll head south, but today I head west to Kansas City.
I’ve enjoyed my time in St. Louis. I visited the Arch, and found my way into a back-alley speakeasy. I spent time in Forest Park where I visited the art museum and the Jewel Box. The park is pretty amazing. It’s bigger than Central Park in NYC and is considered one of the best urban parks in the country. Not only does it have an art museum and science center, but it has a golf course, the zoo, and lots of athletic fields and natural spaces. It is spectacularly designed with lots of walking paths and water features, and it was home to the 1904 World’s Fair and the 1904 Summer Olympics.
I’m still nagged by the desire to rush forward. I suspect that once I hit the landscape of the southwest, I’ll enjoy a different type of exploration. For now, much of my time is spent wandering city streets and visiting coffee shops and bars. As such, my diet consists of beer, pub grub, coffee, and pastries. I like all of those things, but it doesn’t feel like I’ve eaten “normal” food in a while. And with three BBQ cities in a row (Memphis, St. Louis, and Kansas City), I think I’ll have had my fill of BBQ for a while.
I have some other things I think I’d like to write about but will save for other posts if I get to them. For now, I’ll just post some pictures and get ready to hit the road again.
